How do I prepare for an EEOC complaint?

By Verity Workplace. Information for US workers. Sources checked .

Quick answer: Gather the employer details, dates, actions you are concerned about, why you believe discrimination was involved, and any supporting records. The EEOC explains how an inquiry, interview and charge work. A Verity complaint or an online inquiry is not the same as a filed EEOC charge. Check the EEOC directly for current instructions, coverage and time limits.

How do you start?

Prepare a short timeline before trying to fit your whole experience into a legal term. Write each hiring decision, comment, assignment change, discipline or termination with its date and the people involved. Record why you believe the treatment was connected to discrimination, while separating what you know from what you suspect.

What should you document?

The official EEOC filing page describes the information it requests. Organize your record so you can find those details without changing the original account.

  • The employer name, location and contact details.
  • When each action happened and whether anything is ongoing.
  • The actions or words you are concerned about.
  • Why you believe discrimination, harassment or retaliation was involved.
  • Relevant messages, notices, policies and witnesses.
  • Earlier reports and the response, if any.

Is an inquiry the same as a charge?

No. The EEOC describes an inquiry and interview as parts of its intake process, and a charge as a signed statement requesting agency action. Follow the official instructions to understand what has actually been filed. Federal employees and applicants have a separate process.

Should I wait for HR or Verity first?

The EEOC says its filing time limits generally are not extended while you try another dispute process. Check the current deadline instructions or contact the agency promptly. Verity response windows are platform targets, not agency deadlines.

What mistakes should you avoid?

Preparing your record and completing an agency filing are different steps.

  • Assuming saving or sharing with Verity files a charge.
  • Treating an inquiry as proof a charge was filed.
  • Leaving out separate dates for separate actions.
  • Waiting for an internal response without checking outside deadlines.

Where Verity fits

Write your complaint in your own words, add the key details, then choose what happens next. Your original record stays private. Nothing is sent to your employer until you review the employer version and choose to send it. Employees can create, keep and download their record for free.

Verity is an independent record service, not a government agency, law firm or emergency service. It does not file for you, choose an agency, give legal advice or guarantee anonymity. You choose whether to share with your employer and whether to use your record elsewhere.
