How can I report a workplace problem without HR?
By Verity Workplace. Information for US workers. Sources checked .
Quick answer: Write the facts first and check whether your workplace has another reporting contact, a manager outside the issue, an owner, a union representative or an outside reporting option. You can prepare a private Verity record before choosing a recipient. A small workplace or a missing HR department does not mean Verity can guarantee safety, anonymity or a response.
How do you start?
Look for a written reporting policy if you have one. If the concern involves the person who normally receives complaints, note that conflict and look for another available channel. You do not need to decide on a recipient before writing the original account.
In a small team, removing your name may not hide who you are. A shift, role or conversation can identify you. Review those details before you approve an employer-facing version.
What should you document?
Keep the incident record separate from your notes about which reporting channels are available.
- The event, dates, location and people involved.
- Available reporting contacts and any policy you received.
- Why a usual recipient is unavailable or involved in the concern.
- Earlier attempts to raise the issue and what happened.
- Which details could identify you in a small workplace.
- The request you want the recipient to address.
Can I go outside the organization?
You can read official agency resources while considering your options. The agency process depends on the concern and applicable rules. Do not assume that completing an internal complaint is always required, or that an internal process preserves an outside filing deadline. Check the relevant official instructions.
What mistakes should you avoid?
Choosing a channel is a decision you control; preparing a record does not require broad disclosure.
- Sending the complaint to everyone before choosing an appropriate recipient.
- Assuming a no-name summary cannot identify you.
- Leaving the facts unwritten because you have not picked a reporting channel.
- Treating Verity as an investigator or government agency.
Where Verity fits
Write your complaint in your own words, add the key details, then choose what happens next. Your original record stays private. Nothing is sent to your employer until you review the employer version and choose to send it. Employees can create, keep and download their record for free.
Verity is an independent record service, not a government agency, law firm or emergency service. It does not file for you, choose an agency, give legal advice or guarantee anonymity. You choose whether to share with your employer and whether to use your record elsewhere.
